Automatic Transfer Switch Power Distribution Unit
There is a Power Distribution Unit (PDU) out, for purchase, which is specifically designed for single sourced equipment that a lot of us are really going to like. This is the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) PDU.
One of the reasons that we might look into the ATS PDU is because it can help keep costs down on the type of equipment that we buy. As we all know, the more power that we pull the more expensive it is to buy the equipment we need. It is also a good way to use some of the older equipment that we might have around that only has one power supply. This could include equipment like a switch, a router, a smaller piece of equipment or an older server.
The ATS PDU has diverse input and single output. This allows us to utilize all the redundancies of a data center. When we plug our single sourced power equipment into this ATS PDU, our equipment is now connected to both an “A” side and a “B” side.
We are still getting all the redundancies that we need and we only have to plug our equipment into one outlet. Keep in mind that the data center that we are in has to have two uninterrupted power supplies (UPS) and diverse power supplies to be able to utilize this ATS PDU. So, we need to make sure that if we want to use this ATS PDU that we check with the data center we are in to make sure that all of the power requirements are in place.
